CWR for CMRRA

CMRRA administers mechanical rights in Canada. The Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency.

History

Founded in 1975 by the Canadian Music Publishers Association and owned by SoundExchange since 2017, CMRRA licenses reproduction of musical works in Canada — the mechanical counterpart to SOCAN's performance role.

CWR at CMRRA

CMRRA takes CWR directly from publishers and is unusually public about it: it maintains its own CWR help guide, a sign of how central the format is to its intake.

Publishers deliver CWR files to CMRRA directly (as members, affiliates, or sub-publishers). Like nearly every CISAC society, CMRRA works in the CWR 2.1 / 2.2 era — the versions in production use worldwide since the standard displaced the proprietary registration formats of the 1990s. Per-society delivery profiles do change, so confirm the current version and any local quirks before a first delivery.
